Dan Aykroyd recently talked with 660 City News in Canada (via io9), while promoting his Crystal Head Vodka, and naturally the topic turned to Ghostbusters.
Apparently, Aykroyd has written a Ghostbusters prequel that would center on the original trio of Ghostbusters (played by Aykroyd, Bill Murray, and Harold Ramis) during their teens. Here’s how Aykroyd described the project:
“I’ve written Ghostbusters High, where they meet in New Jersey in 1969 and we’re looking to do that as probably a glorified feature or pilot within the next maybe five years…. And it would lead to a television project and I thought of him [Jason Reitman] immediately for that.”
Aykroyd wants Jason Reitman to direct the project after he’s done directing Ghostbusters 3. It even looks like Reitman has a copy of the script already:
“It’s on [Reitman’s] desk but that’s years away from the current project. But it’s a neat idea for a prequel. Imagine casting the three characters as teenagers!”
I could get behind a prequel film or series exploring how this trio became fascinated with ghosts to begin with. As long as it doesn’t overstay its welcome, and the teenage cast nails the personalities brought to life by Aykroyd, Murray, and Ramis, this could be a lot of fun. There’s something about period pieces that, when done right, always puts me in a good mood.
However, Aykroyd acknowledged that he had a few more Ghostbusters related projects he wanted to work on first:
“We have at least one or two other concepts for the Ghostbusters and then we’ll look at doing the prequel, which will be a perfect button on all we’ve done up to that point.”
Maybe they plan on mashing MiB and 21 Jump Street together for 23MiBusters?
The Ghostbusters sequel hits theaters on July 10, 2020.
