Destin Daniel Cretton Returning to Direct ‘Shang-Chi 2’ & Disney+ Series

Destin Daniel Cretton has just closed a deal to direct a Shang-Chi sequel, as well as helm a Disney+ series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Deadline reports that Cretton has inked “an exclusive multi-year overall deal with Disney companies Marvel Studios and Hulu’s Onyx Collective.” Under the deal, Cretton will develop TV projects for both companies and its streaming services.

Shang-Chi managed to defy pandemic box office expectations and became a global success. A sequel was inevitable. A Disney+ series is just a bonus. Could it be about Shang-Chi’s sister, Xu Xialing (Meng’er Zhang) leading the Ten Rings? That could be fun.

However, Variety‘s sources tell them that Cretton’s Disney+ series will be a comedy. That might rule out a Ten Rings show, so maybe it’s something to do with Awkwafina’s Katy? Heck, it could be a new MCU property not even remotely tied to Shang-Chi.

Okay, back to the news. In a statement, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige said:

“Destin is an amazing collaborator who brought a unique perspective and skill to ‘Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings.’ We had a fantastic time working together on the film and he has so many intriguing ideas for stories to bring to life on Disney+, so we’re thrilled to expand our relationship with him and can’t wait to get started.”

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is now streaming on Disney+ and is available for purchase on Blu-ray and DVD.
