Black Panther (2018) is a landmark superhero film, grossing over $1.35 billion worldwide on a $200 million budget. It earned seven Academy Award nominations, including a historic Best Picture nod for a superhero movie and won three Oscars (Best Original Score, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design). It garnered widespread acclaim across the board from critics and audiences alike, claiming it to be one of the best films of the year. Celebrated for its rich Afrofuturist world-building in Wakanda, a strong ensemble cast led by Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan’s compelling villain, Killmonger, and its bold exploration of themes that broke cultural barriers and redefined representation in blockbuster cinema.
However, some argue it’s overrated, claiming its massive praise stems more from cultural significance and historic milestones than from flawless filmmaking. Critics point to pacing issues (a slow first half heavy on exposition), underdeveloped character motivations (especially for some of Killmonger’s followers), occasional reliance on Marvel’s formulaic third-act CGI battles, and narrative conveniences that prioritize spectacle over depth. Detractors suggest the hype, fueled by identity politics, social media fervor, and its role as a “first” in many categories, may have inflated its reputation beyond its actual storytelling or innovation compared to other MCU entries.
So what do you think? Is Black Panther overrated or not? Vote and let us know your answer below!
