First Look at the Tune Squad in ‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’

A whole new generation is about to have strange feelings about a female bunny.

All jokes aside, our first look at Space Jam: A New Legacy, a reimagining of the 1996 classic instead of a straightforward remake or sequel, is here! A New Legacy follows LeBron James as he is sucked into the Warner 3000 entertainment “Server-verse,” alongside his son because the big bad of the movie wants to steal James’ social media followers. Yeah, I know it’s already sounding dumb. Let’s just look at the images, shall we.

According to EW, the film will also see LeBron James travel through the back catalogue of Warner Bros. classics. Here’s what James himself said:

“You can look at the WB catalog and just see how many things they have in the archives. And for me to be able to travel through and be part of Wonder Woman, Casablanca, The Matrix, it was incredible. We were able to dive into some of those worlds, along with some other ones that… I gave you a couple, but I want to save some for the film. I couldn’t believe it, to see some of the live footage that we were able to shoot, along with some of the digital and animation stuff to just bring it all together.”

In addition to the above mentioned films, Mad Max and Casablanca were also name dropped. I’m not sure I like the idea of Space Jam not being just about the Looney Tunes, but I won’t complain until I see the film. I do think the new CGI-animation looks for the Looney Tunes characters aren’t terrible, but nothing will ever top the 1996 film.

Space Jam: A New Legacy hits theaters and HBO Max on July 16, 2021.

What do you think of the first look images? Do you like the 1996 or 2021 versions of the Looney Tunes better?
