First Trailer for Daniel Radcliffe’s ‘Escape from Pretoria’ Released

Yesterday, on the 40th anniversary of the real escape, Empire revealed the first trailer for Daniel Radcliffe’s newest film Escape from Pretoria.

This looks like it could be an excellent prison break film to join the ranks of such classics like Escape From Alcatraz, The Shawshank Redemption and Cool Hand Luke.

The film was adapted from the 2003 autobiographical novel Inside Out: Escape from Pretoria Central Prison by Tim Jenkin. Francis Annan wrote the script and is also the director. The film also stars Daniel Webber (The Dirt), Ian Hart (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone), Mark Leonard Winter (One Eyed Girl) and Nathan Page (Sleeping Beauty).

I think Blank Stare said it best back when he first posted about the film, “I’ve greatly admired the way Radcliffe has been able to move respectfully away from the [Harry Potter] franchise.”

Plot Synopsis:

Daniel Radcliffe stars as Tim Jenkin. A real life ANC activist who was imprisoned in Africa’s maximum security prison Pretoria in the 1970s during the Apartheid. Along with two imprisoned fellow freedom fighters, played by Daniel Webber and Mark Leonard Winter, Tim escaped on 11th December 1970 using hand-made wooden keys which he crafted whilst incarcerated.

Escape from Pretoria has a UK theatrical release on March 6, 2020. I’m not sure if that is the same for the U.S.
