The ongoing narrative that is r/WallStreetBets versus Wall Street is pretty fascinating and crazy. If you have no idea what’s been happening, Google it. I don’t have time to fill you in.
For those of you in the know, Hollywood likes to milk anything “cool and hip”, so it, of course, has multiple projects in the works already adapting this story.
Netflix has a film in development focusing specifically on the GameStop stock surge. Noah Centineo (To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before) has been cast in the lead role. Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker) is in talks to write the script. Scott Galloway, an author and professor at NYU, is also in negotiations to consult on the film’s script.
Deadline states that the Netflix film will “shine a light on the phenomenon of how social media has leveled the playing field and allowed the masses to challenge status quo gatekeepers, for good and bad.”
Meanwhile, MGM is also producing a film on the GameStop stock ordeal. They have acquired the film rights to Ben Mezrich’s book proposal The Antisocial Network. Over on the TV side, independent production company Pinky Promise has announced they are developing a limited series titled To The Moon, chronicling the r/WallStreetBets and GameStop debacle.
Deadline reports that To The Moon “follows two roommates laid off from their jobs at GameStop and AMC, who turn Covid into lemonade by using their stimulus checks to dip into the world of day trading.” The TV show is described as a “chronicle of the movement that grabbed Wall Street by the wallet and chucked it all the way to the moon.”
Pinky Promise is working with “long-time, active members of the r/WallStreetBets on Reddit to make sure we tell the story correctly. This is a movement that could very well dictate the future of Wall Street and individual’s beliefs that they can stand up to Goliath – getting this right is our top priority.”
Everyone following this story knew it was only a matter of time before Hollywood decided to get their grubby little mitts all over the news. The question now is if any of these projects will see the light of day, or if they will disappear into the abyss like where all those projects on the Tham Luang cave rescue seem to have gone.
