Lucy Hale and Robbie Amell to Star in Adaptation of ‘The Hating Game’

Robbie Amell and Lucy Hale are on board to star in the romantic comedy The Hating Game, based on the best-selling novel by Sally Thorne.

Hale will play Lucy Hutton, a kind-hearted woman who finds herself squaring off against her work nemesis, cold and efficient Joshua Templeton, played by Amell. The two find themselves embroiled in a ruthless game of one-upmanship, but things become more complicated when Lucy finds herself growing more and more attracted to the man she’s competing against.

Peter Hutchings (Then Came You) will direct the adaptation written by Christina Mengert, with Claude Dal Farra, Brice Dal Farras and Brian Keady of BCDF Pictures producing. Mister Smith Entertainment will co-finance the film.

“The Hating Game is a gloriously funny and sexy rom-com with a broad audience appeal. We are aiming for films with a clear target demographic and this absolutely hits the spot,” Mister Smith CEO David Garrett said.

Thorne’s The Hating Game was released in 2016 and became a critical success, selling in over 25 countries while also being credited as rejuvenating the literary rom-com genre.

Hale is best known for her work on Freeform’s Pretty Little Liars and will star in the upcoming Riverdale spin-off, Katy Keene. Amell had a starring role on The CW’s The Tomorrow People, and Netflix’s original rom-com, When We First Met.

No release date has been announced.
