Monster Sketch Monday – Ginny from ‘Friday the 13th: Part 2’

Today is Amy Steel’s birthday! I thought I’d mark the occasion with a sketch of my favorite final girl, Virginia “Ginny” Field from Friday the 13th Part 2.

Part 2 was my first Friday, and so it holds a special place in my heart when it comes to the Friday the 13th franchise. It might have been in one of the first Fangoria issues I ever saw as well. Though it’s basically a remake of the original I still prefer it, as it’s better in almost every way that counts (though I do miss Tom Savini’s makeup). Those prowling steadycam shots are awesome, and while I still prefer the hockey mask the burlap sack on Jason has grown on me over the years. (I do wonder who wore it first – the killer in The Town That Dreaded Sundown or Jason, though.)

And Ginny has always been my favorite final girl. She’s smart, sarcastic, capable and strong without being a fearless automaton. She’s terrified the entire time she’s being chased, but you can see her overcome it and do what she has to. I always kind of wanted to see that character again – showing up with a chainsaw and a Psychology textbook to save the next batch of teenagers.

The sketch is a little rough, I’m afraid. Between an inciepient migraine and late work stuff I had less time than usual. I like the Jason in the background, but I’m afraid I didn’t quite catch Ginny’s likeness. I’ll have to try again sometime.

So who’s your favorite final girl? And what’s your favorite Amy Steel role? Hell, what’s your favorite Friday the 13th film, while we’re at it? (Here’s my ranking, if you want to know.)

Would like to be mysterious but is instead, at best, slightly ambiguous.
