‘Onward’ Teaser Trailer: Has Pixar Gone Full Dreamworks?

Disney/Pixar has just released the official teaser trailer for Onward, its next film after Toy Story 4.

Oh man, I have a bad feeling about this. Absolutely nothing about this trailer screams “PIXAR!” The animation, humor, story all seems like something Sony or Dreamworks would come up with. It’s missing the classic Pixar character designs we’re used to seeing (where are my big eyes?!).

The last time Pixar experimented outside its comfort zone, we were rewarded with The Good Dinosaur; a good film in its own right, but nowhere near the quality of recent critical darlings like Inside Out or Coco.

I’m praying that this first teaser is just a rare misfire in marketing, as even Pixar’s misses tend to be better than most animation studios’ best work. Surprisingly, I had a hard time putting it together that Chris Pratt and Tom Holland are voicing the two elves. It’s obvious that famous voice casting is more to draw the adults to the film, otherwise Pixar would have “Featuring the voices of Star Lord and Spider-Man” slapped somewhere on the poster and trailer.

Fingers crossed for a better trailer later this year. Let’s hope that Pixar isn’t slowly becoming the new Dreamworks where every five years they’ll put out a masterpiece, but otherwise they stick to milking their franchises and putting out films that only appeal to children.

Plot Synopsis:

In Disney and Pixar’s “Onward,” two teenage elf brothers embark on an extraordinary quest in a van named Guinevere to discover if there is still a little magic left in the world. Featuring Tom Holland as the voice of Ian Lightfoot, and Chris Pratt as the voice of Ian’s older brother, Barley.

Onward hits theaters March 6, 2020.
