The Hollywood Reporter has just revealed a lot about Christopher Nolan‘s next movie.
First, Cillian Murphy, who has worked with Nolan on a number of his films, will lead the project, which is now titled Oppenheimer. The last time Murphy and Nolan worked together was on Dunkirk. Murphy will be playing J. Robert Oppenheimer, “an American theoretical physics, is considered one of the fathers of the atom bomb, which he helped develop during World War II.”
Universal, who will distribute the feature, has described the project as an “epic thriller that thrusts audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it.”
Production will begin in early 2022. Nolan is writing the script which is based on the 2005 Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer.
THR also reports that Nolan has already assembled some below-the-line talent, including director of photography Hoyte Van Hoytema (Tenet, Dunkirk and Interstellar), editor Jennifer Lame (Tenet), and composer Ludwig Göransson (Tenet).
Universal has also set the American theatrical release date for Oppenheimer. The film will hit theaters on July 21, 2023. That means we have just under two years to wait until we can see Nolan’s next work of art.
