American actor Val Kilmer has died at the age of 65.

His daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, told The New York Times and The Associated Press that the actor had died of pneumonia, a lung infection that can range in severity. Kilmer had also been battling throat cancer for several years now.

Kilmer initially found success on the big screen in comedy roles, leading the ’80s classics Top Secret! and Real Genius. However, he’s largely remembered that decade for playing Lt. Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in the 1986 military action flick Top Gun and Madmartigan in the 1988 fantasy film Willow.

The actor found further success in the 1990s, succeeding Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne / Batman for Batman Forever. He also starred in the hits Tombstone, Heat, and The Prince of Egypt. Other screen credits for Kilmer include Kiss Kiss Bang BangMacGruber, and Top Gun: Maverick. A documentary about his life, Val, was released in 2021.
