Samara Weaving, Takehiro Hira Join ‘Snake Eyes’; Filming Begins This Week

Samara Weaving and Takehiro Hira have joined the G.I. Joe spinoff Snake Eyes, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Weaving is coming off the sleeper hit Ready or Not. She is set to play Scarlett, “the traditionally red-haired counter-intelligence officer. The character had a unique bond with Snake Eyes and frequently partnered with him.” The character was previously played by Rachel Nichols in the 2009 film G.I .Joe: Rise of Cobra.

Henry Golding plays the titular character, a man “seeking revenge for his father’s death by joining a ninja clan and in the process finding acceptance.” Andre Koji, Iko Uwais, and Ursula Corbero are also part of the cast in supporting roles as Storm Shadow, Hard Master, and the Baroness. Haruka Abe and Hira have been cast in undisclosed roles.

Robert Schwentke (Divergent franchise) is set to direct the film from a script by Evan Spiliotopoulos. Filming is set to begin this week in Vancouver, and will also shoot in Japan.

I’ve only ever seen bits and pieces of the two previous G.I. Joe films, and while they looked like fun, they were never really my style. However, the casting alone for Snake Eyes is making me interested in this spinoff. 2018 was a killer year for Golding, who shot to fame with Crazy Rich Asians and A Simple Favor. He’s an actor I’m definitely keeping my eye on to see what he will do next.

Snake Eyes is set to hit theaters October 16, 2020.
