‘Snowpiercer’ Gains Early Season 2 Renewal

Snowpiercer will be sticking around for a while, and it hasn’t even premiered yet.

Variety revealed that WarnerMedia has renewed the series, based on the 2013 film of the same name, ahead of its planned spring 2020 debut. Additionally, the series will now air on TBS instead of TNT as originally planned.

The move comes as part of a rebrand to not make TBS the “comedy channel” and TNT the “drama channel”. Here’s what Brett Weitz, general manager for TBS and TNT, said on the move:

Snowpiercer is the perfect show to kick-off TBS’ entry into dramas with intricate storytelling, stunning visuals and first-class acting. We believe in the longevity of this series and that audiences will be amazed by the fantastical world that brings to life such relevant social, political and environmental issues.”

Snowpiercer has been in development since 2015 with a pilot ordered in 2016 and a series order in 2018. Graeme Manson is signed on as showrunner after original showrunner and series creator Josh Friedman left the show last January. Manson will return as showrunner for season 2.

Plot Synopsis:

Set more than seven years after the world has become a frozen wasteland, “Snowpiercer” centers on the remnants of humanity, who inhabit a gigantic, perpetually-moving train that circles the globe.

Jennifer Connelly leads a cast that includes Daveed Diggs, Alison Wright, Mickey Sumner, Susan Park, Iddo Goldberg, Katie McGuinness, Lena Hall, Annalise Basso, Sam Otto, Roberto Urbina, Sheila Vand. and Jaylin Fletcher. Rowan Blanchard will recur in the first season and become a regular for the second.

Snowpiercer is set to premiere on TBS in 2020.

Personally, I think Snowpiercer is a film that is ripe for television. Just so long as they don’t immediately go for the uprising. Your thoughts on how the series might depart from the film?
