After 39 years, the search has been called off. Mel Brooks has found the money, meaning that Spaceballs 2 needed a new title.
In a pre-taped video as part of Amazon MGM’s CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas on Wednesday, Brooks — who directed, co-wrote, produced, and starred in the original Spaceballs and is producing and starring in the new film — revealed why the sequel will not bear the title Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money.
Plot details for Spaceballs: The New One remain under wraps. Amazon MGM previously described the movie as “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.”
In addition to Brooks, The New One features Rick Moranis, Bill Pullman, George Wyner, and Daphne Zuniga reprising their roles from the original Spaceballs. Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman, and Anthony Carrigan round out the cast, with Pullman playing his father’s character’s son, Starburst.
Spaceballs: The New One will open in theaters on April 23, 2027.
