A Separation (2011)
“A married couple are faced with a difficult decision – to improve the life of their child by moving to another country or to stay in Iran and look after a deteriorating parent who has Alzheimer’s disease.”
Took a little while for me to get into this and I was close to just turning it off but next thing I knew, I was engaged into this everyday family drama. It dealt with some heavy issues but was able to handle them without grandstanding one way or another. Some really solid performances . Highly recommend if you can handle subtitles. (4.25/5)
A Time to Kill (1996)
“In Canton, Mississippi, a fearless young lawyer and his assistant defend a black man accused of murdering two white men who raped his ten-year-old daughter, inciting violent retribution and revenge from the Ku Klux Klan.”
I’m a fan of courtroom dramas and I have always loved this movie. I do have to admit I had to skip the beginning this time as it gets me legitimately upset. I would be right in a cell next to Carl Lee if I was in his position. With this being Matthew McConaughey’s first major role, I think he did extremely well but would have loved to see what he could have done with some more experience under his belt. I feel everyone did a good job with their characters, Oliver Platt, Kevin Spacey, and Kiefer Sutherland were always standouts to me. It was even fun to see old Longshanks as the judge. (4/5)
Locke (2013)
“Ivan Locke, a dedicated family man and successful construction manager, receives a phone call on the eve of the biggest challenge of his career that sets in motion a series of events that threaten his carefully cultivated existence.”
Tom Hardy is the only reason to watch this, well because he is the only thing in this. He does a remarkable job of playing a multi layered character in the confines of a car, but nothing is particularly engaging, and after hearing the phone ring 36 times I was ready for him to just get to his destination already. Why did he always have to take so long to answer the damn phone? Worth a watch if you are a Hardy fan. (3.5/5)
Blackkklansman (2018)
“Ron Stallworth, an African American police officer from Colorado Springs, CO, successfully manages to infiltrate the local Ku Klux Klan branch with the help of a Jewish surrogate who eventually becomes its leader. Based on actual events.”
This was good but never reached great at anytime to me. Of course it hit on some sensitive and timely issues. There is hate in the world and hate is bad. I think what I liked most was Spike Lee’s ability to blend humor and the heavy subject matter without it ever feeling goofy or out of place. I did not like the fact that Michael Buscemi kept making me think Steve Buscemi was in this film though. Mainly because I wasn’t aware Steve had a brother. (4/5)
SHOWS WATCHED THIS WEEK
Game of Thrones Season 8.02: “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”
Episode one felt like an hour long recap which isn’t a bad thing but not overly entertaining either. Episode 2 was much better storytelling and set the stage for what we have been waiting for since Ned Stark first uttered “Winter is coming” back in the first ever episode. The Battle of Winterfell is upon us. Also, Arya baby girl nooooo! Check out the episode recap here!
