MOVIES WATCHED THIS WEEK

North by Northwest (1959)

“A New York City advertising executive goes on the run after being mistaken for a government agent by a group of foreign spies.”

Visually stunning and a gripping thriller with solid acting. Felt a bit tedious in some parts and a little too long for my liking. (4.25/5)

A Nightmare On Elm Street Part 3: Dream Warriors (1987)

“A psychiatrist familiar with knife-wielding dream demon Freddy Krueger helps teens at a mental hospital battle the killer who is invading their dreams.”

A classic in the horror genre that does the best job of combining scary Freddy with one-liner Freddy. This entry offers some of the best characters of the franchise (Kincade is still one of my favorites) with a well-executed story and some damn fine practical effects. Monster snake Freddy still looks great. It was a bit slower in parts than I remember and I don’t understand how anyone can think this is better than the original. (4/5)

Underworld (2003)

“Selene, a vampire warrior, is entrenched in a conflict between vampires and werewolves while falling in love with Michael, a human who is sought by werewolves for unknown reasons.”

Underworld: Evolution (2006)

“Picking up directly from the previous movie, vampire warrior Selene and the half werewolf Michael hunt for clues to reveal the history of their races and the war between them.”

These are just dumb fun with some fantastic gothic imagery but let’s get the most important detail out there and that is Selene is a hot leather-clad badass vampire. I remember enjoying Evolution more than the original upon their initial releases but found 2003 to hold up better during this rewatch. It was more focused on story and it had Bill Nighy as Victor. I still prefer my werewolf transformations the old fashion way.

Underworld (3.5/5)

Underworld: Evolution (3.25/5)
