MOVIES WATCHED THIS WEEK
Streets of Fire (1984)
“A mercenary is hired to rescue his ex-girlfriend, a singer who has been kidnapped by a motorcycle gang.”
The real star of this film is the alternative world Hill has created that is pretty close to a rock ‘n’ roll opera and Dan Hartman’s “I can dream about you” of course. Young Willem Dafoe, who has always looked 57, kidnaps the local pop sensation and must go up against her soldier ex-boyfriend played by Michael Pare. The biggest thing holding this back from being more well-loved is Pare’s performance. His look is perfect for the part but can’t deliver his lines effectively enough to take him seriously. Rick Moranis is running circles around him and you end thinking Pare’s sidekick Amy Madigan is cooler than he is. Dafoe is just fun here as the evil biker gang leader and what is most impressive is how he can still be menacing in vinyl overalls. This is a must-watch, especially for 80s and 50s lovers. There is a sledger hammer fight for crying out loud. (4.25/5)
TV WATCHED THIS WEEK
Homeland S1.E1-6
“A bipolar CIA operative becomes convinced a prisoner of war has been turned by al-Qaeda and is planning to carry out a terrorist attack on American soil.”
First time watch of this series. So far I’m enjoying it. It feels like 24 without the dire time gimmick. Claire Danes is pretty great and completely insane on the show. Eager to see where it goes.
The Blacklist S6
“A new FBI profiler, Elizabeth Keen, has her entire life uprooted when a mysterious criminal, Raymond Reddington, who has eluded capture for decades, turns himself in and insists on speaking only to her.”
I watched seasons 1-4 when they first aired and really enjoyed it. James Spader is one of my all-time favorite actors and he is perfect as Raymond Reddington who is America’s Most Wanted fugitive. He helps a special FBI task force to take down the world’s most dangerous criminals. I lost interest after a certain storyline they went with the show not feeling the same but seemingly got back on track by season 5 leading into season 6 with some fun twists and turns.
