Based on the Marketing, Are You Excited for James Gunn’s ‘Superman’?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Our mission at SAW is to foster conversations about this thing we all love (or love to hate): film/TV. Many of our features are designed with you in mind. Your opinions, to be more to the point. You have ’em. We want to hear ’em.

Question of the Day (QOTD) is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a film/TV-related question that we put to you, the reader. The comments section below is like the feedback box at work; except, in this example, we actually read what you write and care about what you have to say.

I was peeping a Film Threat video this morning about the recent sneak peek for James Gunn’s Superman, and I was kind of surprised at some of the reactions. The main criticism I heard was that the marketing has been a failure so far and that it has been a failure because it’s mostly showing Superman getting his ass kicked. The panel wanted to see Superman being super–basically doing bad ass stuff. They wanted to see him fly, etc.

Now, having lived through seeing Luke Skywalker be completely wasted in the Star Wars sequels, I am somewhat sympathetic to their concerns. At the same time, though, we are talking about trailers. One of the worst qualities of the modern trailer is that it often ruins moments that would have had so much impact if they hadn’t been spoiled in the marketing.

I say save the impactful stuff for the movie.

Also, and I’m not a big Superman guy so don’t @ me if I’ve got something inherently wrong about the character, but I actually don’t mind seeing Superman put in situations that are challenging or make us worried that things might not turn out the way we want them to. To me, that’s called drama. If we are 100% certain that everything will be ok in the end and the filmmakers can’t make us doubt that even a little during the movie, what is the point? I guess what I’m saying is that it’s good to have stakes. It’s good to have some emotional core to the movie. That way when Superman saves the day, we actually want to pump our fists in the theater and clap and cheer.

But, hey, that’s just my two cents. I want to know what you think about it. So the question I put to you is Has the marketing for James Gunn’s Superman made you excited for the movie or has it fallen short of the mark?
