I honestly have no idea who keeps thinking it is a good idea to give Disney+ spin-offs to supporting characters from the live-action remakes. Last year, it was reported that an Aladdin spin-off was in development with Billy Magnussen reprising his Prince Anders character. Now, The Hollywood Reporter says that a Beauty and the Beast prequel series focusing on the origins of Gaston and LeFou is in the works.
Josh Gad and Luke Evans are set to reprise their roles as LeFou and Gaston for what is being billed as “a six-episode musical event”. To add to this insanity, the series will feature new music from Disney legend Alan Menken, who won an Oscar for Best Original Score for the 1991 animated version of Beauty and the Beast.
THR states the show “will take place well before the events of the film and also expand the Beauty and the Beast universe.” People online take this to mean that the series could touch on Gaston and LeFou’s time fighting in the war.
Gad co-created the series with Once Upon a Time creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis. Apparently, the idea for the project came after their Muppets TV project fell apart at Disney. So you are telling me that to make up for a lack of new Muppet material we are getting a Gaston/LeFou origin story?! The world really isn’t fair.
The trio will write all of the episodes and serve as co-showrunners, and they will executive produce alongside Luke Evans. There are no plans for Emma Watson or Dan Stevens to appear as the Beauty or the Beast, but the door is being left open for guest spots.
Honestly, let’s just have these two appear bookending the series. LeFou is telling his origin story to Beauty and the Beast’s kids. You’re welcome Disney and Gad, you can send me my check in the mail.
