In the summer of 2008, Marvel Studios’ Iron Man took the world by storm, grossing over half a billion at the box office. At the time, the character of Iron Man was mostly a relic of the Baby Boomer generation and possessed nothing like the pop culture cache that Superman, Batman, and Spider-Man have retained over the decades. Still, the film Iron Man was kind of test patient zero for the rise of the superhero genre that has held sway over Hollywood for over a decade and a half now. Many people think the superhero genre has overstayed its welcome. Some have argued that it has hurt film and even art and culture.

This video from Like Stories of Old dives into what it calls The Marvelization of Cinema to explain the effects the superhero genre has had on movies. It’s an interesting video, but does Like Stories of Old have a point or is it simply picking on Marvel and superheroes?
