HBO Max Unveils a Pretty Disappointing List of Movies Available at Launch

Reading Time: 8 minutes

If you haven’t been following the Streaming Wars, you probably are unaware that WarnerMedia is launching HBO Max on May 27 for $14.99/month.

We’ve seen trailers and teases of what to expect on the platform, and while it does look like there will be plenty of amazing shows to watch, the recently revealed list of launch movies has me going “huh?!”

Before I begin to criticize the selection, thanks to Comicbook.com for the list and /film for organizing it. The below films have been sorted as Classics, Modern Favorites, Criterion Collection, and Acquired Third Party (that I’m shocked they got).

Warner Bros. Classics

Modern Warner Bros. Films and Favorites

Criterion Collection

Third Party Films They Somehow Got the Streaming Rights To

While the Criterion Collection is a huge snag, I don’t think it’s going to attract subscribers that aren’t cinephiles. My main issue is the lack of Warner Bros. modern classics. You have Fantastic Beasts, but no Harry Potter? You have only the third Lord of the Rings? You have none of the best Batman films? And the acquired content is also a mixed bag. Fast Five and Hobbs & Shaw? Dark Phoenix? The Mighty Ducks trilogy? I just don’t get it. For starters, The Mighty Ducks trilogy is already on Disney+, so this is just a strange double dip already. And then you pick some of the better Fast Saga films, but how did you get just those two?

Honestly, the lack of Harry Potter, The Dark Knight, and other real modern Warner Bros. favorites is what is making me not want to subscribe right away to HBO Max. I either already own these films or can find them elsewhere. It’s a disappointing list that was I’m sure supposed to wow potential subscribers, but instead it’s turned me away. Good thing you got Friends, cause you’re going to need to use them.

What movies are catching your eye as a potential reason to subscribe? Do you find the lack of WB hits surprising? I’m sure Netflix and pre-existing deals are to blame, but it’s still disappointing. Tell us your thoughts in the comments below, Screenager!
