The Scooby-Doo franchise is officially returning to the live-action medium with a new Netflix series that is now in production.
Filming has begun on Scooby-Doo: Origins in Atlanta. To mark the start of production, Netflix shared a first-look image of the cast who will be embodying Mystery Incorporated on X.
“During their final summer at camp, old friends Shaggy (Tanner Hagen) and Daphne (Mckenna Grace) get embroiled in a haunting mystery surrounding a lonely, lost Great Dane puppy that may have been a witness to a supernatural murder. Alongside the pragmatic and scientific townie, Velma (Abby Ryder Fortson), and the strange but ever-so-handsome new kid, Freddy (Maxwell Jenkins), they set out to solve the case that is pulling each of them into a creepy nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets,” reads the logline for Origins.
The cast also includes Paul Walter Hauser, whose role remains under wraps.
Based on characters created by Hanna-Barbera, Scooby-Doo: Origins is a modern reimagining of the beloved group of teens and their very special dog. Showrunners Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg (and their production company, Midnight Radio) are going back to the beginning, exploring the terrifying first case that brings Mystery Inc. together for good.
“One of my first and favorite jobs in Hollywood was sitting with Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera while they signed animation cels,” says executive producer Greg Berlanti. “Josh and Scott and everyone at Midnight Radio have crafted a story that captures their amazing spirits and their genius creation.”
A premiere window for Scooby-Doo origins has not yet been shared by Netflix. We’ll keep you posted.
