‘The Authority’ Movie Dead at DC Studios, Confirms James Gunn

The Authority won’t be joining the DC Universe after all.

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has revealed on Threads that the planned DCU movie is no longer moving forward, explaining, “The script wasn’t quite there but more importantly it didn’t work in terms of the larger DCU both in terms of the story and practical concerns. Maybe some day. Not soon.”

The Authority was announced alongside The Brave and the Bold, Superman, Supergirl, and Swamp Thing in January 2023 as the first five films planned for the DCU’s Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters.

Created by writer Warren Ellis and artist Bryan Hitch, The Authority made its first appearance in 1999 in the comic book of the same name published under DC Comics’ Wildstorm imprint.

The superhero team is mainly composed of characters from Stormwatch, such as Jenny Sparks, Jack Hawksmoor, Apollo, Midnighter, and The Engineer, the latter of whom has already been introduced in the DCU. María Gabriela de Faría portrayed her in Superman and is set to reprise the role in Man of Tomorrow, which is now filming.

Are you disappointed that The Authority is no longer in active development? Do you hope Gunn revisits the project in the future or would you rather see other DC characters brought into the shared universe?
