If you had to name a successful cinematic universe and couldn’t say the MCU, my guess is that you’d pick The Conjuring Universe. Director James Wan has slowly crafted a rich horror universe filled with connected franchises. However, despite the popularity of the Annabelle series, The Conjuring is still where the main bread and butter can be found.
Now, according to screenwriter David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, the upcoming third film The Devil Made Me Do It will depart from the previous main installments. Apparently, the third film will not center around a haunted house!
Johnson-McGoldrick made the revelation on Twitter:
“[The Conjuring 3] is a completely different movie than the first two. The franchise is expanding beyond the ‘haunted house’ formula.”
Director Michael Chaves, replacing Wan who returns as producer, will take the reins of the franchise and deliver an entry focusing on things that go bump in the night.
I’m not the biggest Conjuring fan. I actually think they are rather quite boring films with zero scares, but I know there is a huge fan base. I like the idea of moving away from haunted houses and focusing on some of the Warren’s other cases. And on a completely unrelated note: Annabelle would be 100x scarier if the movie version would have kept the Raggedy Ann design of the real doll.
