‘Babylon’ Flopping at the Box Office Is Still a Mystery to Margot Robbie

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Can someone please explain to Margot Robbie why Babylon flopped at the box office two years ago?

During a recent appearance on The Talking Pictures podcast (via Deadline), Robbie admitted that she was still perplexed as to why the 2022 Damien Chazelle-directed movie about Hollywood making the transition from silent to sound films in the late 1920s only made $63 million worldwide, not enough to make back its $80 million budget.

“I don’t get it either. I know I am biased because I am very close to the project and I obviously believe in it, but I still can’t figure out why people hated it,” the actor said. “I wonder if in 20 years people are going to be like, ‘Wait, Babylon didn’t do well at the time?’ Like when you hear that Shawshank Redemption was a failure at the time and you’re like like, ‘How is that possible?'”

Robbie also reflected on her time making Babylon, sharing that Chazelle was a great director to work with. “Damian is so thorough,” she said. “Do you know what I loved so much about working with him? I felt like no one had really put their foot to the floor with the gas, but he wanted that all the time. He wanted more always. Even when we were prepping.”

Babylon is currently streaming on MGM+ and Prime Video.

Are you in agreeance with Robbie that over time Babylon will become the next Shawshank Redemption? What did you think of the movie? Have you seen it yet? Did you contribute to it flopping at the box office? I know I did.
