A24‘s Bloodsport remake has found its writer-director.
Per Deadline, Michaela Coel is reteaming with A24 to write and direct a reimagination of Bloodsport. She previously collaborated with the studio on the miniseries First Day on Earth and the upcoming film Mother Mary.
“I have long been in awe of fighters, and astounded by the discipline, intensity and isolation the sport demands of them. I am excited to explore this world, especially so with A24 as my collaborators. LET’S F*CKING GO,” said Coel in a statement.
The original Bloodsport, released in 1988, served as the breakout hit for Jean-Claude Van Damme. He played Frank Dux in the martial arts movie, an American Army officer whose training in the art of ninjutsu helps him battle Chong Li (Bolo Yeung) in the underground Hong Kong tournament known as the Kumite.
Three sequels — Bloodsport II: The Next Kumite, Bloodsport III, and Bloodsport 4: The Dark Kumite — all without the involvement of Van Damme, were released in 1996, 1997, and 1999, respectively. The movie was also an inspiration for the video game Mortal Kombat, with playable character Johnny Cage an homage to Van Damme.
Marc Toberoff and Alberto Lensi will produce, with Stuart Manashil and Peggy DiSalle serving as executive producers on the A24-financed and distributed feature.
“In 1988, the now-iconic Bloodsport introduced audiences to the gritty aesthetic of mixed martial arts, and I look forward to bringing back that high-energy tournament format to the big screen again,” said Toberoff.
Do you think Bloodsport needs a remake? Will you be watching, screenagers?
