Children of Blood and Bone has managed to assemble one hell of a cast.
Per Deadline, the upcoming Gina Prince-Bythewood-directed movie adaptation of the 2018 young adult novel of the same name has found its principal cast in Thuso Mbedu (The Woman King) as Zelie, Amandla Stenberg (The Hate U Give) as Amari, Damson Idris (Snowfall) as Inan, and Tosin Cole (Supacell) as Tzain.
Also confirmed for Children of Blood and Bone are Viola Davis as Mama Agba, Cynthia Erivo as Admiral Kaea, Idris Elba as Lekan, Lashana Lynch as Jumoke, and Chiwetel Ejiofor as King Saran, while Regina King, Diaana Babnicova, and Bukky Bakray are in negotiations for the roles of Queen Nehanda, Folake, and Binta, respectively.
Based on the bestselling novel by Tomi Adeyemi, Children of Blood and Bone is set in an African fantasy kingdom in which a young woman goes on a quest to reclaim the magic that was violently stolen from her people. She and her brother ally with the daughter and son of the king to fight back against his brutal rule.
“I am so honored and excited to bring Tomi’s Children of Blood and Bone and the vibrant world of Orisha to life,” Prince-Bythewood said in a statement. “Our incredible ensemble reflects the whole of the diaspora. This is where our magic lies.”
Initially in development at Fox 2000 Pictures (and later Lucasfilm), Paramount acquired the rights in 2022. Filming is set to begin in South Africa in the coming weeks. A January 15, 2027 release date has been set for the movie.
