‘Fear’ Remake Casts Amandla Stenberg to Date a Dangerous Lunatic

1996’s Fear is getting a reboot from Universal and has recently cast Amandla Stenberg in a lead role according to Deadline. The original told the story of young lovers Nicole (Reese Witherspoon) and David (Mark Wahlberg) who’s relationship turns into a frightening game of cat-and-mouse when it’s revealed that Dave is a bit of a dangerous psycho. And there’s a joke there about 90’s Wahlberg that I won’t make.

Stenberg is best known for her role in last year’s well received The Hate U Give helmed by George Tillman Jr. as well as 2012’s The Hunger Games.

Fear is written by Oscar nominee Jonathan Herman (Straight Outta Compton), but no other casting decisions have been revealed at this time.

While the original is mostly remembered as a vehicle that partially climbed Mark Wahlberg and Reese Witherspoon into super stardom, but it was not a terrible mid-90’s thriller that made great cinematographic use of its British Columbia filming location (in the 90’s, people automatically assumed that Canadian woodlands were where terrible, weird things happened, mostly due to watching The X-Files regularly.)

It also spawned this scene:

And by proxy this parody:

What do you think, Wasteoids? Does the Fear remake sound like something you’d want to see? At it’s best we have a close-to-home thriller that’s built to make helicopter parents wring their hands into a bloody mess (and back then, Wahlberg didn’t even have access to Witherspoon’s Facebook account) but on the other hand maybe Witherspoon shouldn’t have been dumpster diving for companionship. In the dark Canadian forest.
