Chris Evans Returning to MCU for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Chris Evans is heading back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

According to TheWrap, Evans will be involved in Avengers: Doomsday in some capacity, but the extent and exact nature of his role is unknown. When we last saw Evans’ Steve Rogers, he had passed on the mantle of Captain America to Sam Wilson after choosing to stay in the past, living out his life with Peggy Carter.

So yeah, Steve Rogers is an old man now in the sacred timeline. While Marvel Studios could definitely bring him back as Old Steve Rogers, it’s more likely, given that we’re in The Multiverse Saga, that Evans will be back as a Steve Rogers variant. With Robert Downey Jr. coming back as Doctor Doom, why not have Evans play Captain Hydra, a version of Steve from the comics who was loyal to Hydra.

Deadline subsequently confirmed the casting, while sharing that Anthony Mackie is expected to reprise his role as Sam Wilson/Captain America in Doomsday. For those keeping track, Downey, Evans, Mackie, and the casts of The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Thunderbolts* are all confirmed to appear in Doomsday, with Tom Holland and Benedict Cumberbatch also expected to film scenes.

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on May 1, 2026.

What do you think about Chris Evans returning to Marvel? Do you want to see him as sacred timeline Steve Rogers (a.k.a. Old Man Steve) or as an evil variant serving Downey’s Doctor Doom?
