Crazy Rich Asians is heading to the small screen.

Per Variety, a series adaptation of Kevin Kwan‘s Crazy Rich Asians book trilogy is in development at MaxAdele Lim, who co-wrote the 2018 film, has been set as showrunner and executive producer, while director Jon M. Chu will also return to executive produce. At this time, it’s unclear whether the television series will be a sequel to the 2018 film or an entirely new adaptation.

Crazy Rich Asians was a huge hit for Warner Bros. in 2018, with the film adaptation grossing over $239 million against a $30 million budget. Yet, somehow, the sequel struggled to get out of development. At one point, the studio was toying with filming the second and third books in Kwan’s trilogy back-to-back. Lim was originally set to return as co-writer on China Rich Girlfriend but left after a pay dispute. With Lim back in the picture, it’s sort of a head-scratcher as to why WB would take the franchise to television when the movie was so successful.

The Crazy Rich Asians series will be executive produced by Lim via her production company 100 Tigers alongside Naia Cucukov; Chu via his production company Electric Somewhere; Kwan; and Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson via their Color Force banner, which developed and produced the movie. SK Global Entertainment will also produce, with Chloe Dan overseeing the project for the company.

Are you sad the franchise isn’t continuing on the big screen?
