Sgt. Rock won’t be making the jump from animation to live-action in the DC Universe after all.

Per The Hollywood ReporterDC Studios has scrapped its live-action Sgt. Rock movie, even though the action war movie was already in pre-production ahead of a planned summer shoot in England. It is unclear why the project has been shut down at this time, although an insider told THR that Sgt. Rock will be reassessed by DC at the end of this year and could potentially enter production next summer.

Colin Farrell was on board to star as the titular World War II hero, with Mike Faist reportedly lined up for a supporting role, likely as one of the men of Easy Company, the combat unit fighting Nazi forces in Europe.

Sgt. Rock wasn’t initially part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU plans, but was added to the lineup based solely on the strength of Justin Kuritzkes‘ script, which reportedly had Rock teaming up with the female French resistance fighter to “find the mystical Spear of Destiny, the spear used to stab Jesus Christ during his crucifixion and in lore is said to have supernatural properties, before the Nazis get their hands on it.”

Luca Guadagnino had been set to direct Sgt. Rock, arguably the most prestigious director to grace a DC superhero movie since Christopher Nolan.
