Disc or Digital?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Our mission at SAW is to foster conversations about this thing we all love (or love to hate): film/TV. Many of our features are designed with you in mind. Your opinions, to be more to the point. You have ’em. We want to hear ’em.

Question of the Day (QOTD) is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a film/TV-related question that we put to you, the reader. The comments section below is like the feedback box at work; except, in this example, we actually read what you write and care about what you have to say.

Our current shelter in place situation has got many of us leaning on streaming services to pass the time and keep our minds preoccupied. We’re lucky to have these kinds of resources at our fingertips to keep us entertained and distracted, but what if we didn’t have access to Netflix and Amazon Prime and YouTube and all the others? What if the internet went down? What if popping a physical disc or tape into a player was the only way to watch movies?

So I put the question to you: Do you keep a physical library or are you streaming and digital all the way? A mix of both?

I don’t buy that many movies, but when I do, I buy physical copies. And even if a digital download is offered with the physical copy, I keep the disc. I wouldn’t mind digitizing my library and keeping it on a server at some point, but I will never get rid of my real discs. With Ultraviolet going the way of the dodo, I just don’t trust any of these services enough to ditch my hard copies. And I’m not into buying movies for packaging or gimmicks, but there is something about having a physical copy that digital just can’t touch.

But what about you? Did you Marie Kondo your disc collection and go the minimalist route of digital or do you keep a library of discs and maybe even VHS tapes? Or do you do some mix of the two?

Tell us about it in the comments, and I’ll see you in the trenches.
