Does ‘Barbie’ Actually Need a Sequel?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Our mission at SAW is to foster conversations about this thing we all love (or love to hate): film/TV. Many of our features are designed with you in mind. Your opinions, to be more to the point. You have ’em. We want to hear ’em.

Question of the Day (QOTD) is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a film/TV-related question that we put to you, the reader. The comments section below is like the feedback box at work; except, in this example, we actually read what you write and care about what you have to say.

Last week, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Warner Bros. and Greta Gerwig & Noah Baumbach are in “early stages” of developing a Barbie 2. While a sequel to the 2023 blockbuster hit Barbie seems like a no-brainer (it did make over $1 billion), the movie told a complete story. As we saw earlier this year with Joker: French Subtitle, not every billion-dollar hit from the Warner Bros. catalog necessarily needs a sequel (nor will audiences flock towards one).

So, the question I ask today is: does Barbie actually need a sequel?

Barbie is a fine film. I didn’t enjoy it as much as everyone else, but I’ll admit that there were some great moments, especially “I’m Just Ken” and Robbie’s whole performance. However, where do you go from the 2023 movie? It’s not like they set up a sequel. Unless we go even more meta by pitting Barbie against the Bratz doll line, I cannot see a version of this where it doesn’t end with the sequel being considered a flop. However, if anyone can do it, it’s Greta Gerwig (although how about you make those Narnia movies first?).

So what about you, screenagers? Can you see a sequel to Barbie working?

I’ll see you in the trenches.
