My favorite thing about movies, more than the writing and the directing and the nudity, is the acting. All a movie has to have for me to watch it, is a great cast. It doesn’t even have to be a huge cast—throw a couple people in a room ala Twelve Angry Men and have them act against each other and I’m happy. He’ll, I’m happy if it’s just one great actor acting his ass off like Locke or Buried. There’s something about the craft of inhabiting another person’s skin that’s fascinating to me and a large part of that is the accents.

Some of my favorite actors are the ones that can do any accent. Like Alec Guinness or Gary Oldman or Peter Sellers. Watching someone nail an accent or better yet, finding out someone doesn’t talk with the accent you’re used to, is always a treat. In this video, accent expert and dialect coach Erik Singer breaks down 32 different actors and explains why some of them are amazing, why some are terrible and why it’s not always the actors fault. If you enjoyed this video, there’s about five others and they’re equally as informative and entertaining.
