Long before he became the most influential director of his generation and even before he garnered a bit of celebrity as a video store wunderkind, Quentin Tarantino made a film called My Best Friend’s Birthday. Since it’s only 36 minutes long, you could be forgiven for thinking it’s a short but in actuality, most of it was lost to a fire.

34 minutes of the film are gone and since Quentin hardly ever talks about it, we’ll never know what in the original cut. The film (in its current state), is about a young man who continually tries to do something nice for his friend’s birthday, only to have his efforts backfire. With plot elements that would be later be recycled for True Romance and Pulp Fiction and with a far more comedic tone than anything else he’s ever, My Best Friend’s Birthday is an interesting little curio that fans of the director should totally check out.

What did you think about Tarantino’s first film? Are you fan of the director and his work or are you a contrarian asshole?
