DreamWorks Animation is moving ahead with a sequel to The Wild Robot.
According to TheWrap, Troy Quane, one of the directors behind the SAWard-nominated Nimona, will take over directing duties from Chris Sanders on The Wild Robot Escapes. Heidi Jo Gilbert, who worked as head of story on the first film, will serve as co-director.
Sanders will write the screenplay for the new installment, which will be based on the second book in Peter Brown’s The Wild Robot trilogy. In it, Roz and her bird-son Brightbill try to escape a dairy farm and return to their island.
The Wild Robot was released in 2024. The movie, about a service robot shipwrecked on an island learning to adapt to her surroundings, was a major critical and commercial hit. It also won Best Animated Film at the 6th Annual ScreenAge Wasteland Awards.
No release window has been set yet for The Wild Robot Escapes, although DreamWorks Animation currently has September 24, 2027, and September 22, 2028, reserved on the release calendar. Either of those dates could end up going to the sequel, especially if it has a tight around like The Bad Guys 2 had, arriving just three years after its predecessor.
We’ll keep you posted as more information on The Wild Robot Escapes comes to light. Until then, fans can stream The Wild Robot on Netflix.
