Nothing gets a conversation and/or debate going faster than an alternate casting. Everyone has their own opinion about what actor should play which role and, more importantly, nobody can ever agree with anyone else’s picks. If it’s even slightly different than what you pictured in your head, you will immediately disregard it and ridicule the person who suggested it. The FanCast aims to inspire conversation, create debate, and provide ammo for the bloodthirsty nerds who can never be wrong.
Earlier this week, it was reported that Joseph Kosinski, the filmmaker behind Top Gun: Maverick and the upcoming F1, had been tapped to direct a new Miami Vice movie for Universal. Nightcrawler filmmaker Dan Gilroy is penning the script, from an earlier draft by Top Gun: Maverick scribe Eric Warren Singer.
After getting its start on the small screen in the ’80s, Miami Vice made the jump to the big screen in 2006 with a feature directed by Michael Mann (who also executive produced the original series). We know very little about Universal’s Miami Vice remake at this time, but that won’t stop me from sharing my choices for who Kosinski should cast as his Crockett and Tubbs. Let’s get this fancasting started…

Austin Butler | James “Sonny” Crockett
Past Crocketts: Don Johnson (1984 Series) & Colin Farrell (2006 Movie)
Austin Butler is a perfect match for the suave yet troubled detective of James Crockett. His magnetic screen presence and ability to convey complex and charismatic characters would help reenergize this ’80s classic. Especially if it is set in the throwback neon-soaked, high-stakes world of Miami, where the original TV series was set. Butler’s blend of cool confidence and layered sensitivity would reimagine Crockett as a contemporary hero. Just think how sexy he would look in a white suit with a baby blue t-shirt and sunglasses.

Lakeith Stanfield | Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs
Past Tubbses: Philip Michael Thomas (1984 Series) & Jamie Foxx (2006 Movie)
For my Tubbs, I would want to counterbalance Austin Butler’s Crockett with a more cool-headed yet fiercely loyal detective who could throw in some one-liners here and there to lighten the mood. Lakeith Stanfield’s natural charisma and sharp wit would blend well with Butler’s style. Stanfield will showcase a street-smart sophistication to help the two detectives navigate the city’s underbelly. He has a unique energy and swagger that can help Tubbs stand out and not be overshadowed by his partner.
Now I’ll turn the question over to the Wasteland. Who do you want to see Kosinski cast as the next Crockett and Tubbs?
