Prime Video’s ‘Jack Ryan’ & HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’ Are Making the Jump to the Big Screen

Two well-received television drama series are making the jump to the big screen.

Jack Ryan

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon MGM Studios is developing a feature-length continuation of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, the Prime Video adaptation of the novel series of the same name that starred John Krasinski. He’ll return for the untitled Jack Ryan movie as the titular intrepid CIA analyst, with Wendell Pierce also back as CIA deputy director James Greer. Michael Kelly, who appeared in the series as Mike November, is in negotiations to return as well.

Andrew Bernstein, who served as an executive producer and director on Jack Ryan Season 2, will direct the feature, which has a script penned by Aaron Rabin, who served as a co-executive producer and writer on Season 4. Jack Ryan ran for four seasons on Prime Video from August 2018 to July 2021, consistently ranked among the top three most-watched series globally on the streamer.

It’s been said that the movie could receive a theatrical release, but it’s too soon to tell. We’ll keep you posted.

Game of Thrones

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. has been quietly developing at least one film set in George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy universe, Game of Thrones. Multiple sources describe the project as very early stage development, with no filmmaker, cast, or writer attached yet.

This report comes several years after HBO shot down Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss’ idea for the hit fantasy drama series to conclude on the big screen as three feature-length movies. At the time, HBO wanted to keep Thrones on the small screen. Now, it looks like plans have changed.

Game of Thrones is easily the closest thing WB and HBO have to Star Wars (in terms of a shared universe with endless potential that doesn’t involve superheroes). They’ve been trying (and failing) to get more than one show into production at a time. Currently, House of the Dragon is doing well on HBO, while another prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is planned to be released in 2025. Of course, there are about seven series that were worked on and then shelved, so yeah, it’s definitely succeeding as being WB’s Star Wars.

We’ll keep you posted when actual information about this project is revealed.

Would you watch either of these movies in theaters?
