With his Akira movie dead, Taika Waititi is turning his attention to a different dystopian character: Judge Dredd.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Waititi is attached to direct a new feature film based on the Judge Dredd comics. Drew Pearce, whose screenwriting credits include Iron Man 3, Hotel Artemis, The Fall Guy, and Michael B. Jordan’s upcoming The Thomas Crown Affair, is set to write the screenplay. No studio is attached yet.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but sources say that Waititi and Pearce’s pitch was inspired “more from the comics than the previous screen iterations, leaning into the world-building and dark humor. It is also meant to be a fun sci-fi blockbuster that nonetheless speaks to this moment in culture.” And, as is the case with any IP these days, the movie is intended to launch a Dredd Cinematic Universe. Yay?
Judge Dredd has previously been adapted twice. First in 1995 with Sylvester Stallone in the lead role and then again in 2012 with Karl Urban as the title character.
We’ll keep you posted as Waititi and Pearce’s Judge Dredd movie comes together.
