Kirsten Dunst had her agent on the phone like Cuba Gooding Jr., telling her to “SHOW ME THE MONEY!”
Seven months after telling the Town & Country magazine that she’d love to star in Minecraft 2 solely to “make a movie where I don’t lose money,” Dunst has been cast in the video game sequel, per Deadline.
Dunst will play Alex, one of the primary avatars available to players of the Minecraft video games. The character made a cameo at the end of 2025’s A Minecraft Movie, where she was physically portrayed by Alice May Connolly (from the back only) and voiced by Kate McKinnon.
Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Matt Berry, and Jennifer Coolidge are all slated to return for Minecraft Movie 2. Plot details remain under wraps. Jared Hess is returning to direct the sequel from a script written with Chris Galletta.
Four days after joining Minecraft Movie 2, Deadline reported that Dunst had also been cast in The Housemaid’s Sequel. She joins a returning cast that includes Sydney Sweeney and Michele Morrone.
“It is a privilege to bring The Housemaid’s next chapter to the screen with Kirsten Dunst. She is an icon. Her career reflects extraordinary range and fearlessness,” said Erin Westerman, president, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. “Opposite the ever-magnetic Sydney Sweeney, she will be an electrifying force in a world where nothing is ever quite as it seems.”
Lionsgate quickly moved forward with an adaptation of Freida McFadden’s The Housemaid’s Secret, after The Housemaid turned into one of the biggest hits of 2025, grossing nearly $400 million at the global box office.
In The Housemaid’s Secret, Millie (Sweeney) returns, taking a job keeping house for a woman she’s never allowed to see — only to discover the truth behind the locked door that threatens to expose secrets far darker than her own.
A Minecraft Movie 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on July 23, 2027, while a release date for The Housemaid’s Secret hasn’t been set yet.
