A Knight Rider movie is in the works at Universal.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald are in talks to reimagine the ’80s television classic Knight Rider for the big screen. All three are in early talks to write the screenplay, with Hurwitz and Schlossberg also in talks to direct.
The trio will also produce, via their Counterbalance Entertainment production company, joining Kelly McCormick and David Leitch, who are producing through their banner 87North and its first-look deal with Universal. McCormick and Leitch previously revamped the ’80s TV series The Fall Guy as an action rom-com movie last year, albeit to a mixed critical and commercial reception.
What Is Knight Rider?
Created by Glen A. Larson, Knight Rider aired on NBC from 1982 to 1986, starring David Hasselhoff as Michael Knight, a detective who becomes an agent for FLAG, the Foundation for Law and Government, and is partnered with KITT, a modified, artificially intelligent, and indestructible Trans Am. Together, the two sped head-on to fight criminals who operate above the law.
The new Universal movie isn’t the first time that Hollywood has tried reviving Knight Rider since it went off the air in 1986. A feature-length continuation of the original series was released on TV in 1991 as Knight Rider 2000, while an unrelated TV sequel film, Knight Rider, aired in 2008 and served as a backdoor pilot for the short-lived NBC series of the same name. There’s also the late ’90s television series Team Knight Rider and the made-for-TV film Knight Rider 2010, which don’t feature Michael Knight or KITT at all.
After reviving The Karate Kid franchise on Netflix with Cobra Kai, Heald, Hurwitz, and Schlossberg have become attached to all sorts of 1980s-adjacent projects. They previously developed a spinoff of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off for Paramount that would have told the story of the two valets and the joyride they took with the classic Ferrari. It’s unclear what the status of that project is at this time.
We’ll keep you posted as more details about the Knight Rider reboot become available.
