Could we see Lucy Liu back as Alex Munday in a future Charlie’s Angels movie? The actor isn’t counting herself out of any future reboot of the beloved action franchise.
Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Liu shared that she hadn’t heard anything about a possible Charlie’s Angels reboot: “I don’t hear much of anything until it actually happens.” That said, she revealed that she remained open to the idea of revisiting Alex Munday in a future movie, even though she didn’t expect another installment in the franchise to be announced anytime soon. “I’m never going to say no to that. But I would be surprised to hear anything that gets done or undone. You just never know until it happens,” she said.
Liu starred in the first two Charlie’s Angels movies — the eponymous 2000 entry and its 2003 sequel Full Throttle — appearing alongside Cameron Diaz as Natalie Cook and Drew Barrymore as Dylan Sanders. A standalone 2019 sequel, which also served as a franchise reboot, didn’t feature any of the actors, with Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska instead starring as the titular private detectives.
The 2000 and 2003 Charlie’s Angels movies were box office hits, with each grossing over $250 million worldwide despite mixed reviews, while the 2019 reboot was a critical and commercial flop. Any plans for a sequel have since been scrapped.
However, Charlie’s Angels remains a beloved IP even if it’s not as popular as it was in the 1970s when the original series first premiered. It’s only a matter of time before rights holders Sony attempt to rejuvenate the franchise with a new installment.
