One of the many action movies Alan Ritchson has shot over the last two years is finally coming out.
Entertainment Weekly has shared several first-look images from Ritchson’s action comedy movie Playdate, which can be viewed above and below. He stars in the movie opposite Kevin James, with a supporting cast that includes Isla Fisher, Alan Tudyk, Stephen Root, Benjamin Pajak, and Banks Pierce.
Directed by Luke Greenfield (Let’s Be Cops) from a screenplay by Neil Goldman (Shrinking), Playdate follows James’ Brian, a newly-unemployed accountant who becomes a stay-at-home dad to his young stepson after losing his job, as he accepts a playdate invitation from the charismatic Jeff (Ritchson), a fellow stay-at-home dad who turns out to be a loose cannon. Expecting a slow afternoon of small talk and football with their sons (Pajak and Pierce), Brian finds himself thrust into utter chaos as a group of ruthless mercenaries pursues him and Jeff. What begins as a playdate quickly “gets fired up into a full-blown survival situation,” teased James to EW.

“Just when you think it’s going one way, it swerves into something you never saw coming. But beneath the insanity, there’s real heart, pathos, and vulnerability,” shared Greenfield about the movie’s unpredictable nature. The filmmaker added that he “wanted to tell a story about two dads learning how to be great fathers, even if they didn’t have great fathers themselves.”
Ritchson, who has seen his star power rise significantly since Reacher premiered a couple of years ago, was drawn to the script’s “surprising amount of heart,” as well as the “wild contrast between suburban dad life and this total explosion of chaos and action.” The actor recalled how the Playdate‘s “absurd mashup of everyday parenting and full-blown action just spoke to me.”
Playdate is slated to hit Prime Video on November 12, 2025.
