Would Dave Bautista Have Been a Better Peacemaker Than John Cena?

Our mission at SAW is to foster conversations about this thing we all love (or love to hate): film/TV. Many of our features are designed with you in mind. Your opinions, to be more to the point. You have ’em. We want to hear ’em.

Question of the Day (QOTD) is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a film/TV-related question that we put to you, the reader. The comments section below is like the feedback box at work; except, in this example, we actually read what you write and care about what you have to say.

During a recent appearance on The Howard Stern Show, The Suicide Squad writer-director James Gunn revealed that he had originally written the role of Peacemaker for Dave Bautista, who portrayed Drax in his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. “I wrote the character of Peacemaker for him, and we offered him the role, but it was offered two movies, and we weren’t paying him a lot, so he had to go where the money was,” Gunn explained to Stern.

After Bautista passed, Gunn approached John Cena, having been impressed by his performance in Trainwreck. The rest is history. However, what if Dave Bautista hadn’t turned Peacemaker down?

So, the question I ask today is: would Dave Bautista have been a better Peacemaker than John Cena?

It’s really hard for me to wrap my head around Bautista as Peacemaker. I think it would have worked within the confines of The Suicide Squad, but I cannot see the character being so beloved by the fandom that Gunn resurrects him for his own show. Cena and Bautista have very different comedic timings, and I just imagine Bautista’s Peacemaker being way more gruff and rough around the edges.

So what about you, screenagers? Do you think we dodged a bullet or missed out on the best casting ever?

I’ll see you in the trenches.
