It looks like Daniel Craig isn’t joining the DC Universe after all.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Craig is no longer attached to star in DC Studios’ Sgt. Rock, an upcoming mid-budget movie that would have reunited the actor with his Queer director Luca Guadagnino. The filmmaker remains attached to the project, which boasts a screenplay by Justin Kuritzkes (Challengers, Queer).
While an official reason for Craig’s departure hasn’t been given, sources have indicated that the actor’s schedule ran into roadblocks with that of his wife, actor Rachel Weisz, while others state that the actor is a bit sour on the role after Queer didn’t snag him an Oscar nomination.
Hollywood has tried bringing Sgt. Rock to the big screen for decades but to no avail. Previous attempts included Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis (at different times). Created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert, Sgt. Franklin John Rock first appeared in DC Comics’ Our Army at War (1959) as a World War II soldier who served in the infantry. Rock’s talent includes shooting down German plans with a single submachine gun and tossing grenades with great accuracy. When he’s without a gun, he’s a great street fighter, and can survive gunshots.
DC is hoping to shoot Sgt. Rock this summer in the United Kingdom. The search is already on for Craig’s replacement, with Jeremy Allen White, among others, at the top of the wishlist. We’ll keep you posted on who eventually gets cast.
