Universal is about to take the Lego franchise in an unexpected direction.
According to Deadline, The Lego Group under its deal with Universal is making four live-action movies. That’s right, live-action. Not CG/live-action like the four Warner Bros./Lego movies, but just live-action. You have my attention, Universal.
While plot details remain under wraps for three of the four movies, the creative teams have been unveiled. Jake Kasdan (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Red One) is directing one of the movies from a script written by Andrew Mogel & Jarrad Paul (The D Train). Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman) is attached as co-writer and director on one of the other movies. She wrote her Lego movie script with former DC Entertainment president Geoff Johns.
The last of the unknown Lego movies will be directed by Joe Cornish (Attack the Block), who is rewriting from a draft by Heather Anne Campbell (Rick & Morty), which was off a treatment by Simon Rich (Miracle Workers).
The last of the movies, and the only one we know anything about, will be a live-action adaptation of the Lego Ninjago brand, which was introduced in 2011 as a line of ninja-themed construction toys before evolving into a major multimedia property. Kevin and Dan Hageman, who created and wrote the earlier season of the long-running animated series Ninjago, are writing the script for the new movie. This will be the second movie based off the Ninjago brand after Warner Bros.’ 2017 animated feature, The LEGO Ninjago Movie.
No release dates have been set for any of these movies. We’ll keep you posted once we know more about any of these.
