MOVIES WATCHED THIS WEEK

Kickboxer (1989)

“Kurt Sloane must learn the ancient kick boxing art of Muay Thai in order to avenge his brother.”

This was so bad. I hadn’t seen this since I was a kid and I don’t really remember loving it then but when Jean Claude Van Damme is the best actor in the film, you gots problems. Drunk Van Damme dancing is a highlight and the final fight is fun. That’s about it. (2/5)

Gangs of New York (2002)

“In 1862, Amsterdam Vallon returns to the Five Points area of New York City seeking revenge against Bill the Butcher, his father’s killer.”

This movie is flawed but I end up loving it every time I watch it. Bill the Butcher is such a great character that with each watch, I want more stories of his past. Bill as a kid probably getting picked on with him beating the mess out of the bullies. Young adult Bill trying to make his and then Bill’s rise to the leader of the natives. I would so be there for a mini-series about this on Netflix. (4.5/5)

Annihilation (2018)

“A biologist signs up for a dangerous, secret expedition into a mysterious zone where the laws of nature don’t apply.”

After watching Color Out of Space a couple of weeks back, I have been wanting to revisit this film. This was my third watch and I loved this movie, even more, this time around. I’m trying to put more thoughts down from somethings I picked up on that I hadn’t before but I will say I was paying more attention to the characters this watch. Their interactions and how they approached each situation caught my eye. The movie is gorgeous and the score is one of my favorites. I’m here for those to aspects alone. (4.5/5)

Clouds of Sils Maria (2014)

“A film star comes face-to-face with an uncomfortable reflection of herself while starring in a revival of the play that launched her career.”

I’ll be honest. I only watched this for one reason and one reason only. Kristin Stewart was really good in this and I enjoyed the back and forth between her and Juliette Binoche’s character. It is a straight character driven film that doesn’t really go anywhere. If you can invest in the characters you will enjoy it. I could only invest in one of them so when she wasn’t on screen, my attention drifted. (3/5)

The Rocketeer (1991)

“A young pilot stumbles onto a prototype jetpack that allows him to become a high-flying masked hero.”

Check mine and Sailor’s thoughts out here!

 TV SHOWS WATCHED

I’m Not Okay with This S1

“Sydney is a teenage girl navigating the trials and tribulations of high school while dealing with the complexities of her family, her budding sexuality, and mysterious superpowers just beginning to awaken deep within her.”

I really enjoyed this. I’m really digging the 20 minute or so episodes and have been searching for more shows with that structure that aren’t sitcoms. I’m just not feeling hour-long episodes atm. Sophia Lillis seems like a future star. She looks like a natural at her young age at showing a range of emotions. This show is funny but has some heart to it too. Where shows lose me sometimes is with the supporting characters. The ones here are solid and help the overall show. I recommend.
