Zach Cregger‘s Resident Evil is officially a go at Sony.
According to Deadline, the studio has set a September 18, 2026 theatrical release date for the reboot, which is being produced and co-financed by Constantin Film. While Warner Bros. had expressed interest in acquiring the project, Sony was keen on keeping its hands on the $1.2 billion-grossing franchise.
I’m sure it doesn’t hurt that Cregger’s involvement in the Resident Evil reboot makes this a project worth watching. Cregger became one of the most sought-after horror filmmakers following his 2022 debut, Barbarian. His next film, Weapons, starring Josh Brolin and Julia Garner, will be released by WB in 2026. Cregger co-wrote the Resident Evil reboot with Shay Hatten (Ballerina). Plot details remain under wraps, although the movie reportedly “harkens back to the original Capcom game’s horror roots.”
“I’ve been a rabid fan of these games for decades, and to be able to bring this amazing title to life is a true honor,” said Cregger in a statement to Deadline.
Added Sanford Panitch, president of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group: “Zach is one of the most talented exciting new directors to come on the scene in many years. His brilliant approach in restarting and refreshing this legendary Sony franchise instantly makes this one of our most important releases in 2026.”
We’ll keep you posted when casting begins for Cregger’s Resident Evil reboot.
