Robert Eggers burst on the horror scene with 2015’s acclaimed The Witch, and has re-teamed with leading genre production company A24 to bring us The Lighthouse, a fantasy horror film that Eggers wrote and directed.
Honestly, I wasn’t the biggest fan of The Witch overall but highly admired Eggers direction and authentic feel of his 17th century horror. This looks to be another tightly directed nightmare shot on 35mm black and white stock. It recently premiered at Cannes and the critics have been raving about it ever since. A lot of the praise has been heaped on the “incredible performances” of the lead stars Willem DaFoe (Spider-Man, The Florida Project) and Robert Pattinson (Good Time, High Life and your soon to be Batman).
There hasn’t been much released in way of plot or details except for A24 describing The Lighthouse as:
A hypnotic and hallucinatory tale of two lighthouse keepers on a remote and mysterious New England island in the 1890s.
The film, written by Robert Eggers & Max Eggers and also starring Valeriia Karaman, will be released on October 18, 2019 in NY & LA, with an expansion to follow.
I have to say I am pretty excited about this and the trailer looks great and like a throwback to some classic horror. I have no idea what to expect, but DaFoe and Pattinson seem to have solid chemistry playing off each other here. Also, check out the fantastic and eerie poster below.
What do you guys think of this black and white horror footage so far? Are you digging the vibe and is it enough to get you to pay and see this original horror film?
