Tony Gilroy Doesn’t Think He’ll Return to ‘Star Wars’ After ‘Andor’ Season 2

Andor Season 2 will be the last time you see Tony Gilroy in the Star Wars galaxy.

During a recent interview with Collider, Gilroy was asked about his future with the long-running sci-fi franchise beyond Andor‘s forthcoming second and final season. For the unfamiliar, Gilroy has been closely involved with Star Wars projects set in the preceding five years before the events of the original 1977 movie.

He was first hired by Lucasfilm in 2016 to provide rewrites and direct reshoots on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Four years later, Gilroy was brought on to serve as series creator, showrunner, and head writer on Andor, the Rogue One prequel about how Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) became a Rebel spy.

With Cassian Andor’s story set to come to a close with Andor Season 2, Gilroy doesn’t see himself returning to a galaxy far, far away anytime soon, if ever.

“It’s not really part of my plan. I’ve been peripherally involved for 10 years and intensely involved for six years, so that’s a pretty big chunk of my life. There are other things to do,” he explained. “I think when it’s done, I will have left a pretty big piece of Star Wars real estate behind. I’m feeling guilty about not chipping in.”

What’s Next for Tony Gilroy?

Gilroy revealed that he’s trying to make “a movie about movie music” that he would like to direct. “So, I have a movie I’m trying to get off. We’ll see if I get the money for it. I’m in a whole other world again. I’m back out there with my hat in my hand, trying to raise money,” he said.

Andor Season 2 premieres on Disney+ with its first three episodes on April 22, 2025. A new batch of three episodes will then be released weekly until the 12-episode season has concluded.

Are you a fan of Andor? Are you bummed Tony Gilroy doesn’t want to do more in a galaxy far, far away?
